Higher education, any of various types of education given in postsecondary institutions of learning and usually affording, at the end of a course of study, a named degree, diploma, or certificate of higher studies. Higher-educational institutions include not only universities and colleges but also various professional schools that provide preparation in such fields as law, theology, medicine, business, music, and art. Higher education also includes teacher-training schools, junior colleges, and institutes of technology. The basic entrance requirement for most higher-educational institutions is the completion of secondary education.

This college was take over by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1972 and in 1986 it was established as Govt. Postgraduate College with bifurcation, consequently the science faculty had been developed into Govt. Postgraduate Science College, which was awarded the status of ‘Model College’ by the state government in 1987, however nomenclature has been done by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Chhattisgarh in 2008 as Government E. Raghavendra Rao Postgraduate Science College, Bilaspur (enclosed).

The institution aims at providing quality education by inculcating social, cultural and moral values and molding the conduct and character of students, so as to enable them to face the challenge sin their real life.
